Addiction: Whose Fault Is It?

April 14, 2022 Robin Mooty

Rebekah Chin Lee, discussion moderator

Our first in-person get-together in 2022 centered around a topic that goes to the heart of everyday life: what responsibility do food companies have to promote healthier diets? We used a case study and texts from Catholic social teachings to jump into a lively discussion about ready-to-eat foods that we find on our grocery shelves.

  • How much of the responsibility for healthy eating is up to the consumer?

  • How can we pressure companies to monitor themselves?

  • What changes can each person make to get healthier eating back on track??

  • What role does consumer education play and who is responsible for this?

  • What influences around us make it difficult to pursue a healthy eating plan?

  • How can food companies better serve the common good?

  • How can we promote healthy eating among friends and family without overstepping boundaries?

Through sharing experiences and opinions it became clear that there are no easy answers. Changing habits is never easy but we can aim to make the best choices for ourselves and support those who are struggling by finding good resources for them and listening without judgment.
